About Us

Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition

Our Mission

The Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition is a community-wide collaboration that mobilizes and prepares families and the community to provide targeted mentoring and academic coaching that assists public school students in achieving high school graduation.

Our Work

The Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition, through our network of Coalition Partners, provides mentoring and academic coaching to students who have been identified by their teachers as needing extra support to succeed academically.

We recruit, screen, train and place mentors and academic coaches with these students in a variety of in-school and after-school programs.

We also provide informative workshops for students' families that prepare them to support their student's academic success, connect with community resources and become more involved with their child's school.

Our History

The Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition (ABEC) grew out of concern about the high dropout rate and the significant achievement gaps between groups of students when defined by ethnic and socio-economic factors.

The two school systems, community leaders, and many youth-serving nonprofits were working hard on increasing the graduation rate and reducing the achievement gap but students continued to fail at increasing rates. Our Coalition was formed to address the issues collaboratively.

Today the ABEC is a unique collaboration among our Coalition Partners: the City and County school systems, 14 nonprofit organization service providers, 5 area colleges, community volunteers and our funders.

As a result, the network of support surrounding these at-risk students is increased from just the school and the home to include ABEC's member agencies, mentors and academic coaches, staff and the larger community. Each and all have a stake in every child's success.
