What We Do

Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition

How We Identify Students

We work with our public schools to identify students that need the extra support of an academic coach or mentor.

Parents and caregivers of a student may contact the Education Coalition's Program Coordinator to learn more about the services and to find out if their child is eligible.

Services

Academic Coaching: Academic coaches are trained to support students by assisting them with a wide variety of tasks that support educational success including: organizational skills, navigation of the requirements for graduation, relationship building with teachers and school personnel, preparing for exams, homework help, and other necessary tasks for school success.

Mentoring: Mentors focus on companionship, academic coaching, guidance for career and higher education, self-esteem building, perspective broadening, issues relating to manhood & womanhood, conflict resolution, & cultural respect and awareness. We train mentors to work with their mentee on building relationship and life skills with an emphasis on academics including planning and organizational skills.

Family Involvement: We offer parent workshops on academic and family issues, networking opportunities and brainstorming sessions on how to improve ABEC services. We currently host three family events:

  • Start the School Year Right - workshops that focus on starting school and setting up relationships with teachers.
  • Mid-Year Tune-Up - workshops that focus on the change of semester.
  • End of Year Celebration - a celebration in honor of students families and volunteers. Also providing information for families to use during the summer months.

How We Work With our Coalition Partners

What makes this community-based program remarkable is that each Coalition Partner has agreed to work with Coalition staff and volunteers to serve those children schools have referred to us.

Coalition Partners are responsible for serving the students, maintaining programs, and meeting the standards of the Coalition.

In return for their efforts, Coalition Partners receive financial support and technical assistance. We are committed to learning and promoting best practices in a variety of areas from service delivery to administrative procedures.
