Mission Statement


The American Civil Liberties Union - UNCA Chapter

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization devoted to preserving the civil liberties guaranteed by the United States Constitution.  The mission of the ACLU is to preserve and extend the rights of the individual guaranteed in the Constitution to everyone in the United States. The ACLU works to ensure that legislation and policy are in agreement with the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution including:

  • Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.
  • Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
  • Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
  • Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

The ACLU club of UNCA welcomes all students who are interested in individual freedoms to Join and participate in this club.

The ACLU works to educate the public on issues related to civil liberties. We also advocate for law and policy that are in accordance with the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution. The ACLU actively defends the constitutional rights of all people in the courts on a wide range of issues.
