Friday, March 28th: An Evening with Scott Ligon

Screening of Escape Velocity, Whitman Room of Ramsey Library, 3:15-5:30pm

Escape Velocity explores the connection between A.D.D. and creativity, using the director’s own life in self-deprecating, humorous examples. The film is a stream of consciousness, multi-layered narrative that emulates the day-to-day A.D.D. experience.

The film has won several wards and played in festivals all over the world, including screenings in Moscow, London, Toronto and San Francisco.

Among other awards, Escape Velocity won “Best Experimental Film” at the USA Film Festival, Dallas, Texas. This is an Academy Qualified Competition. Ligon has accepted a distribution offer for Escape Velocity from Shorts International, the world’s leading short film brand.

A 10 minute version of the film is on the DVD accompanying the recently released second edition of Michael Dean’s acclaimed how-to book Thirty Dollar Film School, Thompson Course Technology.

Scott Ligon: Director Bio

Scott Ligon is a digital artist. He received his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He studied under renowned original abstract expressionist Grace Hartigan and attended “Perspectives on Criticism” classes taught by Robert Storr, formerly senior curator of painting and sculpture at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Recently, Scott had three works exhibited as part of the VSA Arts Show, “Transformations”, an international juried exhibition about disabilities at the Terrace Gallery of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The jury panel included: Amy Horschak, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Stacey Schmidt, former associate curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Scott has also recently had works in four separate shows in Los Angeles including “Her Name Was Elizabeth: 60 years of Obsession with L.A.’s Black Dahlia” at the The Regent Galleries and “Small Wonders” a Juried Group Exhibition at Pharmaka Gallery, both in Los Angeles’ Gallery Row.

This year, the author received an award from Derek Cartwright, Executive Director of the San Diego Museum of Art for one of three works he had in “Independent Visions X”,  a juried group exhibition at The Cathedral Center for Performing and Visual Arts, St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego.

He is the author/director of the animated short film, “Escape Velocity”, painted in the style of his digital paintings.

He also recently authored and completed the principal photography for his second film, “Figure/Ground”. It’s a lecture on the value of creative thought and the visual language, mixed with a narrative of the director’s father passing away. It explores how the death of a loved-one often compels a person to consider what is truly important in life.

The cast includes veteran actor Allan Kulakow, who has been in several movies, including Death by Dawn, Syriana, The Good Shepherd, and HBO’s Something the Lord Made. He appeared as the Joint Chief of Staff on West Wing. Of literary note, the cast also features Pulitzer Prize winning poet Claudia Emerson. The Director of Photography for the film is Ian Hinkle. His camera work contributed to a number of award-winning films, including “The Living Coast” (Discovery), Anne Makepeace’s “Baby It’s You” (PBS) and Laszlo Pal’s “Born to the Wind” (PBS, National Geographic). The Makeup Artist for “Figure / Ground Relationship” is Jim A. Choate, who is nominated for a prime time Emmy this year for his makeup work for “The Revolution” on A&E’s History Channel.

Scott Ligon teaches Digital Art and Design classes, (his two favorite subjects), at the University of Mary Washington in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he lives with his wife and two sons.

Scott frequently lectures on the subjects of Creativity, Filmmaking, and Digital Fine Art.
