Headwaters, UNC Asheville's creative arts magazine, is published every spring and features poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art from UNCA students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Headwaters presents Creative Arts Awards each year. One winner in each category receives $100. The winners are announced at the annual Headwaters reception, and are recognized at UNCA's Academic and Leadership Awards Celebration in the spring.

Thomas Wolfe Award in fiction: Students may submit 15 pages of fiction. May be short story, novella, novel excerpt, etc.

Wilma Dykeman Award in non-fiction: Students may submit 15 pages of creative non-fiction writing.

Carl Sandburg Award in poetry: Students will be awarded based on individual poems.

An independent panel, not associated with Headwaters, will evaluate all contest entries. Writers will not be identified to the judges prior to evaluation. All submissions accepted to the magazine will be automatically considered for applicable awards.
