Welcome to UNC Asheville's NEMAC
  • The University of North Carolina’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center specializes in using science communication and delivery to develop decision-making tools for local and regional elected officials and the public.
  • NEMAC makes relevant big topics such as climate change, forest health, natural hazards, and land use change. We use different tools such as movies, posters, web interfaces, interactive maps, etc. to make the topics “come alive” and be of interest.
  • NEMAC works to turn data into decisions. We take data from our local city and county, combine it with national data sets, and create tools that our local decision makers can use to address critical issues.
  • NEMAC is an applied environmental research center and is wholly funded through grants and contracts from local, state, and federal government and the private sector.
  • NEMAC support undergraduate research and employs many students each year as interns. Students are actively engaged in NEMAC projects and contribute to NEMAC papers, presentations, and other publications.
  • NEMAC crosses boundaries, by furthering collaboration, discussion and understanding between experts, the general public and our elected officials, in order to reach better decisions.
  • NEMAC staff have expertise in visualizations, GIS, programming, multimedia, decision-making, and environmental science.
