Technology to Teach Environmental Education
Asheville is in a unique position when it comes to Environmental Education. Primary and secondary schools in Western North Carolina already have affordable environmental education programs available to them through a visit to The North Carolina Arboretum and the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Schools can even survey urban streams with a visit from RiverLink. With the new RENCI Outreach Vehicle for Education and Research (ROVER) schools can schedule classes from all three of these programs in one visit. The ROVER is equipped with a built-in diesel generator, portable 47" plasma screen with video conference capability, 4 laptops, a web server, satellite internet connection, and additional educational supplies specific to each program offered. The ROVER will deliver field trips providing an increased opportunity for area schools to experience environmental science and technology at a lower cost and higher convenience.
Adults will also benefit from the ROVER's portable technology. The Land of Sky Regional Council will use the van to add value to community meetings and information sessions. The large plasma screen and GeoDome will add a visual dimension to the work that Land of Sky is charged with. The 4 available laptops and wireless internet connection will enable groups to research questions and record their work. The Media Arts Project and NEMAC are working with Land of Sky to create visualizations for an adult audience to address disaster mitigation issues and possible preventative action.
