NEMAC and UNC Asheville

NEMAC can offer assistance to UNC Asheville faculty and staff in the following areas. Please contact NEMAC if you need more information or to take advantage of these opportunities.



Physical Resources

In support of a grant from Renaissance Computing Institute (Renci), the following equipment was purchased and is available for use by UNC Asheville faculty:

  • The Visualization Wall is a 15 foot wide, 7 foot high screen using two rear projectors connected to a standard PC. It can display multiple windows and applications or can display one window spanning the entire screen. The Wall is located at the Renci@UNC-Asheville engagement site located at the AB-Tech campus in Enka.

  • The GeoDome is an 15 foot high, inflatable, curved projection screen that supports immersive visualizations. The GeoDome can be transported and set up at almost any location.
NEMAC Staff Expertise

NEMAC staff have considerable expertise in the following areas.

  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS), mapmaking, and digital cartography
  • Database design
  • Web page design
  • Database, GIS, and web programming
  • Multimedia design and graphic design
  • Science communications, delivery and outreach
  • Decision-making processes and tools
NEMAC Staff Academic Opportunities

Jim Fox, NEMAC Director

  • Taught Earth Science training class with classroom exercises for Teacher Training for the last three years, providing teachers with NC Rock Kits and Weather and Climate Kits
  • Ran Awesome Aquifer and Remote Sensing workshops for area middle schools and high schools
  • Taught classes on Peak Oil, Climate Change and Uncertainty in Decision Making for the MLA program
  • Co-Created an extended lab/lecture for CSCI 373 Science Visualization which resulted in the students creating the modules for the Haze Forecast Kiosk (see the results at www.hazecast.org)

Dr. Joe Brownsmith, Assistant Professor

Greg Dobson, GIS Research Scientist

  • Taught ATMS 37302 GIS in Meteorolgy course

Karin Lichtenstein, NEMAC Project Manager

  • Co-created and hosted NC Science Olympiad events: Awsome Aquifer 2007, Remote Sensing 2007 and 2008
  • Available to teach Introductory Physical Geology, Introductory Environmental Geology, and Introductory Environmental Sciences labs

Dr. Todd Pierce, Research Scientist

  • Adjunct instructor for Warren Wilson College; teaches GBL 225 Introduction to Geographical Information Systems

Susan Weatherford, NEMAC Program Manager/Project Manager

  • Available to teach Composition Courses
