Strategic Outlook for NCDC Research in an Integrated Observing
Environment
Marjorie McGuirk, Meteorologist, National Climatic Data Center
Marjorie will describe her work for the Director of the National Climatic
Data Center on integrating surface observing systems. She is helping to
position NCDC for its future roles within NOAA, long term planning for new
areas of research, and short term management of new endeavors such as
Weather for Transportation along highways.

Climate Change in the Geologic Record: What is Man's True Impact?
Jim Fox, Research Associate, NEMAC
Climate change is a continual process. Jim will explore the preserved
geologic record (similar to counting tree rings) to see the implications
for the present-day. Bring your snow shoes and hip waders; you may need
them both.

Brian May, UNCA Computer Science student and NEMAC research student
This presentation will highlight Brian's NEMAC internship with the
National Climatic Data Center. He is using Integrated Surface Hourly (ISH)
data for trend analysis of the visibility from Asheville Regional Airport.
Brian will discuss how they handle incomplete and inconsistent datasets.
Additionally, he will present techniques for solving performance problems
caused by the large datasets.
