Strategic Outlook for NCDC Research in an Integrated Observing
Environment

Marjorie McGuirk, Meteorologist, National Climatic Data Center

ncdcMarjorie will describe her work for the Director of the National Climatic Data Center on integrating surface observing systems.  She is helping to position NCDC for its future roles within NOAA, long term planning for new areas of research, and short term management of new endeavors such as Weather for Transportation along highways.

Climate Change in the Geologic Record:  What is Man's True Impact?

climateClimate change is a continual process.  Jim will explore the preserved geologic record (similar to counting tree rings) to see the implications for the present-day.  Bring your snow shoes and hip waders; you may need them both.

Dealing with Non-Ideal Data

Brian May, UNCA Computer Science student and NEMAC research student

non ideal dataThis presentation will highlight Brian's NEMAC internship with the National Climatic Data Center. He is using Integrated Surface Hourly (ISH) data for trend analysis of the visibility from Asheville Regional Airport. Brian will discuss how they handle incomplete and inconsistent datasets. Additionally, he will present techniques for solving performance problems caused by the large datasets.
