What is a Fraternity?
A fraternity is an organization that offers to its members the opportunity to make their college years an experience of a lifetime. Members are exposed to educational, social, philanthropic, networking and leadership opportunities unmatched by any other student group on campus.
Sigma Nu's a group of men who not only work hard to build a strong chapter of leaders, but who also support each other's individual values. We do this by working together to share Sigma Nu's common vision of "Excelling With Honor." We are not interested in merely organizing a social club or otherwise random group of students. Rather, we want men who can develop themselves as leaders by challenging the rest of their student community while simultaneously building lifelong friendships. |

What is Rush? |
Rush is a period of formal recruitment in which Fraternities seek out new members for their existing chapters, and give non-members a commitment free opportunity to investigate what they are all about. Typically, most freshmen males attend Fall Rush at UNC Asheville because it's a great way to meet new people, and find out which fraternity is right for you. Sigma Nu Rush is completely FREE for any one that wants to attend. Even if you have never previously thought about joining a fraternity, it is a great time to learn more about the Greek system, and most likely you will find that it is not exactly what you think. |
If I Rush, Do I have to join? |
| No, Rush is completely commitment free. It is simply a great opportunity for you to come out and learn about Sigma Nu, and have fun all at the same time, because all of our events are FREE for you to attend!
We encourage you to use it as an opportunity to investigate whether or not Sigma Nu is right for you. |
My Parents don't like fraternities, what should I do? |
| Many parents have falsely stereotyped fraternities because of the media's portrayal of the Greek system. To fight these stereotypes, encourage your parents to research the purpose of fraternities, specifically Sigma Nu, or to visit the campus, meet members of the brotherhood, talk to local alumni, and visit our web site. It is important to understand that Sigma Nu was established to develop young men as leaders and well-rounded students. We also encourage you to still come out for Rush, that way you too can explain to your parents the benefits of being Greek.
Also, encourage your parents to contact UNC Asheville's Office of Student Activities if they have any questions or concerns. 828.232.5000 |
What is Sigma Nu's Policy on Hazing? |
| Sigma Nu Fraternity was formed in 1869 as an alternative to the harsh hazing practices inflicted on cadets at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Our founders held the belief that brotherhood should be based on mutual respect, not on humiliation and violence. Sigma Nu still holds this belief today.
Hazing our candidates would go against the very principles this fraternity was formed on, and would be a disgrace to our heritage and to our chapter. We stand firmly behind this, and make it very clear that there is absolutely no hazing of any kind in this chapter. |
If I'm new to campus, shouldn't I wait to get my feet on the ground before joining? |
| We know what kind of a new and different experience leaving home and coming to college can be. The quicker you meet other students, the more comfortable you will feel on campus. By joining in your first year, you will find adjusting to university life a lot easier.
Most members who didn't join their Freshmen year wished they had because they felt they missed out on a lot of activities that they would have otherwise been a part of. |
Are Greek students successful in college? |
| National studies have shown that Greeks are more likely to graduate from college than non-Greeks, and that holds true here at UNC Asheville. Students who go Greek are more likely to return to school each year than students who are not a part of the Greek system. Why?
When you feel like a part of something, when someone feels accepted and appreciated, they are more likely to stay around. Greek students are some of the most involved and connected students on campus. Greek involvement in campus clubs and organizations is tremendous; most Sigma Nu's belong to at least one club or organization outside of the chapter. When students are tapped into the campus, they have incentive to return each year. This leads to higher graduation rates among Greek students than non-Greek students. |
Will joining Sigma Nu affect my grades? |
| Joining a fraternity is a large time commitment, however, time management and scholarship are a couple of things emphasized in our chapter. Sigma Nu also holds study hours not only for their new members, but also for their initiated members, to ensure that they continue to focus on their academics.
It is also important to note that Sigma Nu's Average GPA is higher than the all-male average at UNC Asheville. We contribute this accomplishment to the relentless efforts of each brother to help each other, both inside, and outside of the classroom. |
What kind of leadership opportunities are available to me in Sigma Nu? |
Developing leaders is one of the foundations of Sigma Nu, so naturally there are several opportunities for leadership in our fraternity. Aside from the multiple positions you can hold within the fraternity, our chapter has a history of being leaders in other organizations on campus as well.
Since our founding at UNC Asheville in 1993, we've produced
6 Student Body Presidents, 7 Student Body Vice-Presidents, and
a multitude of Student Senators and Executive Cabinet members.
