![]() Our initial efforts focused on inventorying the flora and fauna using a variety of techniques such as installing drift fences to capture amphibians and reptiles and using Sherman live traps to census small mammals. The plant communities at the site are diverse due to microtopographic effects and to different levels of disturbance, and include 10 community types. These communities support a diverse flora and fauna. Species that have been documented through 2000 include 17 species of amphibians, 13 species of reptiles, 89 species of birds (including 36 species of verified or presumed nesters), 29 species of mammals, and over 370 species of vascular plants. Animals that are of particular interest in terms of biogeography, conservation biology, game management, or outdoor education include the four-toed salamander, spotted salamander, bog turtle, eastern ribbon snake, timber rattlesnake, golden-winged warbler, Swainson's warbler, hooded warbler, wild turkey, black bear, white-tailed deer, wild boar, bobcat, and the meadow jumping mouse. |
